Here it is my final poster , I created my poster based around the Chronicles of Riddick movie graphic, I felt that my typeface suited the aesthetics of the poster corresponding well, keeping within the style. I liked the simplistic aspects of the poster and the effectiveness it portrayed from having a such a simple design. I created the posters dark and mysterious atmosphere by shooting the image of myself in a spotlight setting, later enhancing effects such as shadows on photoshop. Im delighted with the final outcome as it ties in with the sci-fi and futuristic theme I had envisioned.
Uppercase on illustrator
Here is the final uppercase version of my typeface, I found it relatively easy to transition from lowercase to uppercase. As it was just a case of repositioning the letters and tweaking the design style around their uppercase form, I also used a thicker stroke to make it significantly bolder than the lowercase.
Lowercase on illustrator
After sketching it out roughly, I have re-drawn my typeface using illustrator giving it a more sleek and refined look. I have made some adaptations since the original sketches mainly to the positioning thanks to the use of the grid format on illustrator. This made it a lot more practical to aline each individual letter within the grid constraints, identify the kerning and spacing also keeping all the letters in proportion. Whilst it was simple to replicate my typeface onto illustrator I had some issues with the design of the original “w”as I felt once alongside the rest of the alphabet it wasn’t corresponding with the other letters enough. I think this was mainly due to it having too many diagonal lines and the fact it didn’t contain any right angles when the majority of my other letters do. So I altered the “w” so that it fit in with the rest of the typeface and shared the same characteristics/style by eliminating the diagonals, replacing them with right angles.
First draft of final idea
Here it is the first draft of my final typeface, incorporating techniques from De Stijl really benefitted me in giving the design a more futuristic aesthetic, which I had desperately needed. Ive also included a little twist by adding Art Deco features specifically elements of style moderne and lastly using the format and structure of Wim Crouwel’s new alphabet by eliminating curved lines.
De Stijl – Piet Mondrian
Since I wasn’t yet satisfied with my previous sketches I carried out further research and came across De Stijl a Dutch art movement dating back to 1917 originating from Amsterdam. I was drawn to the artwork of Piet Mondrian, specifically the symmetrical balance and emphasis on cubism presented in his paintings. I also liked the way the lines in some of his paintings overlap each other to create new constraints forming new geometric shapes within them. From previous research of the wipeout video game I’ve found a trend that using cubes is effective and contributes to creating a more futuristic feel. I hope to exercise the geometric aspects of the artwork into my typeface as I think it will link in with my desired style.
